You may have already heard of solid shampoo, which is becoming more and more common in the bathroom. You wet your hair, rub it in with your shampoo and your head is clean. For some time now, zero-waste products have been in vogue, because between the bottles of shampoo, shower gel and tubes of toothpaste, the rubbish bin is filling up fast.
The toothpaste tube not very handy
Let's talk about the toothpaste tube, which is not very practical, let's be clear! Between the tube that you never close and the fact that you don't empty it completely, toothpaste is a calamity! Because yes, about 4% of the content of each tube of toothpaste is wasted.
Have you heard of solid toothpaste? Usually available in the form of a tablet, you simply bite into it, wet your brush and brush your teeth as usual. The little tablet will reduce to a powder and leave your teeth clean.

The different types of solid toothpaste
It is available in different textures and forms:
- Powdered: moisten your toothbrush and dip it in the powder or sprinkle it on
- Chewable: moisten your brush, crunch the little tablet and brush your teeth as usual.
- Solid: this toothpaste comes in the same form as a solid shampoo. To use it, nothing could be simpler: moisten your brush and rub it on your toothpaste until you have the desired amount.
- Homemade solid toothpaste
If you are a fan of homemade products, it is also very easy to make your own solid toothpaste, a fun activity that you can do with your family.
To do this, you will need the following ingredients and quantities:
- 15 g coconut oil
- 21 g of clay of your choice
- 25 drops of peppermint essential oil
- 5 g of sodium carbonate or bicarbonate of soda
- 5 g beeswax
- 5 g vegetable glycerine
You can replace peppermint oil with lemon oil or tea tree oil. These oils are interesting for oral health. However, they are optional and are not recommended for pregnant and breastfeeding women and children under three years of age.
- The different stages of the recipe
Recipe to be made in a bain-marie
Over a low heat, pour the vegetable coconut oil and beeswax into a bowl and heat in a bain-marie
Then remove the pan from the water bath and add the drops of essential oil, the clay, the vegetable glycerine, the calcium carbonate and the bicarbonate of soda, depending on what you have chosen. It is important to mix between each ingredient you add.
At the end, your mixture should be smooth and homogeneous. Do not hesitate to put the mixture back into the water bath if it hardens.
Then pour your mixture into a silicone mould, which you can find in specialist DIY shops or online (https://www.formulebeaute.com/boutique/materiel-et-accessoires/materiel/moule-silicone-petites-cavites/).
Leave the mould in the fridge for at least two hours, then remove from the mould and place the small solid toothpaste cubes in a jar (which you have cleaned beforehand). When brushing, simply moisten and scrub the surface of your solid toothpaste with your toothbrush.
